Halisahar
This town, situated about 40 km north of Kolkata, was a medieval river settlement prominent in the pre-Mughal era. Its name is Muslim, a corruption of 'Haveli-sahar' or 'City of Palaces'. Minor landlords and merchants built several terracotta temples here in the 17th and late 18th centuries both in the at-chala and the ratna styles. Most of these, especially the earlier ratna temples, are now ruined. |
